The Austrian resort of Schruns-Tschagguns, in the heart of the Montafon region, has welcomed this week-end 56 riders that had come to try their luck and get one of the 22 tickets for the second qualification event of the Nissan Sports Adventure Freeride Tour that will take place in Flaine (France) on the 8-10th Feb.
Hamish Ackland After the bib draw on Friday night, the rookies went quietly to bed in order to be on top form for facing the long day that awaited them on Saturday. Appointment at 7am in the dark at the bottom of the gondola and start at 7.30am with the sunrise. The riders went by group and rode under the eyes for the judges (all pro-riders having participated in the Verbier Xtreme) that were acting as selectors for the occasion. At the end of this morning of ride, the selectors announced the names of the 34 riders that could participate in the afternoon contest. Some of the non-selected riders came home very disappointed and others stayed to support their friends.
At around 1pm, after a short break, the women opened the contest. The Swiss skier Laura Bohleber, from the top of her 1m50, flew over the face, impressing the judges by her rapidity and ease. In the female snowboarders, the Russian Elisabeth Pahl won the first place thanks to the choice of an especially fluid line given the difficult snow conditions.
Gennady Hryachkov On the men's side, Hamish Acland from New-Zealand performed, with a perfect style, the fastest run of the day. “I wanted to join quickly my friends at the bottom", he explains… In snowboard, it's also a Russian rider, Gennady Hryachkov, that impressed the judges with a spectacular run and the 2 biggest jumps. “For me the most important thing was to be here with all my friends, thanks to everyone !". He's right, thanks to all the riders that offered to the public a spectacular show and that managed to communicate their passion by commenting their run in the evening on a giant screen in Schruns. |
